Media Literacy & Technology CTGE-6261-L01
John Elfrank-Dana, Fordham University
ADOL Traditional Eng/Soc Studies; TFA Eng
Summer 2010
Purpose: It's the goal of this course
to expose you to the variety of the latest new media tools, their
accompanying methods, relevant educational philosophies, technology
standards and online professional communities that facilitate
teaching and learning in and outside of the classroom.
Course Requirements
- Regular access to a computer online, a Google account.
Grade breakdown:
Attendance & Participation:
Regular attendance is not having more
than two absences. More than three absences may result in loss of
credit for the course. Lateness (more than 15 minutes) will count as
half an absence. Satisfactory participation assumes regular comments
and questions in class.
Weekly Journal
Entry: You will
receive from me an e-mail, by Friday afternoon, with assigned focus
questions. Responses are due by the next class. The primary purpose
of these journal entries is to provide an opportunity for you to
reflect on how you can integrate what you are learning with your
teaching practice.
New Media
Project
Goal: Create a class project that incorporates Web 2 media (Google
tools) and fosters participatory culture skills. You can find some
examples of uses for Google Tools here:
http://www.google.com/educators/all_grades.html
You will:
1. Present the activity to the class (approx. 10-15 min.). You will
use the projector and online
computer.
2. Show the
content standards addressed and how it relates to and
technology standards on
your unit/course plan with a one or more sentence annotation.
3. Design the plan incorporating all the appropriate lesson or
project elements including
consideration for students with special needs where
appropriate/possible.
4. Incorporate tools from Google, or elsewhere, that bring diversity
in activities to the project.
Such tools could include but are not limited to: discussion,
blogs, reader, student
sites/wikis, Webquest, documents, maps...
4. Field questions from classmates about the activity.
5. Upload all your relevant documents to Google docs and share with
me:
jelfrank2@gmail.com
Your plan should include, but may not be exclusive of, the following
components
:1.
Content
area standards addressed.
2.
Technology standards addressed with
explanation of how they were delivered.
3.
Technology requirements for completion of the project (what
the teacher and students need in terms of
equipment).
4.
Skill Set Requirements: What set of skills will the teacher
and student need to complete the
work/perform the task.
5.
Development Sequence (not required for WebQuests, as it
should be apparent in the WebQuest page),
outlining the progression of the activity.
6.
Assessment rubric for evaluating student work (if a WebQuest,
it should be in the WebQuest page and is
not needed in the lesson plan).
7.
Your individual reflection on developing this project as a
teacher and learner. (250+ words)
Refer to
our Resources Page for helpful
