| Introduction to
Participation in Government
Premise of the Class:
When the people fear their
government, there is tyranny; when the government fears the people,
there is liberty.
Thomas Jefferson, author of The Declaration of
Independence
What does this quote say about how
citizens should view the government if they want to be free?
Power 101- How is power
exercised in your life?
What is "power"?
Max
Weber - Power is the ability to exert one's will on others.
3 Types of Power:
1. Charisma - a leader has a
kind of influence over others, through appeal or fear.
2. Traditional - society has
always had certain rules and institutions you just don't
question (often religious).
3. Legal/Rational - people
generally think that the rule-making process is fair and that
how it is enforced is reasonable and appropriate.
Exercise (answer in your
notebooks):
1. Think of one situation where you have experienced each of the
three types of power in action.
2. Explain briefly each and why it is an example of Charisma,
Traditional or Legal/Rational power.
3. How is power supposed to be exercised in a democracy?
4. Briefly describe who Thomas Paine and Max Weber were (click
