Student Rights & Responsibilities Spring 2012 Semester Department of Social Studies Due to the Department of Education’s Zero Tolerance Policy in light of increased violence in 1. Students are not allowed to use cell phones in class at any time for any reason. Students who violate this policy will have their phones confiscated until a parent/guardian can come to the school to retrieve it from the deans’ office. 2. Students are required, at the request of the teacher, to hand over all personal possessions for inspection, for any reason. Students that refuse to cooperate will be suspended. 3. Students are required to put their coats in their lockers for the duration of the school day. Students who do not follow this rule will have their coat confiscated by security agents and will be sent home without the coat. The student will be allowed to retrieve the coat the next day. 4. Students may only wear clothes that are acceptable to the tastes of the school administration. Examples of such clothing include typical business attire. However, any clothing that expresses, in words or form, the political or religious belief, not previously approved by the administration, of the student will not be permitted. Religious attire that includes Christian crosses, Jewish Stars of David, and Muslim head dress will be allowed. Other religious garb will not be permitted.Students who wear school uniforms will get special privlidges and 10 bonus points on all grades. 5. Students who have a complaint about an individual teacher must resolve that issue with the teacher. No other recourse is available to remedy the situation. However, if the problem cannot be resolved, the student does have the option of dropping the class and taking it again in summer school. 6. Students are required not to eat in class. Any student caught eating in class will have their food confiscated and lunch room privileges suspended for one week. 7. Since free speech is a privilege in school, any student that makes another person angry or to have hurt feelings by what he/she has said will face possible suspension. 8. In order to expedite the school discipline process, a student will be allowed one argument of defense with the dean handling his/her case. The decision of the dean will be final. This includes matters of suspension. No access to the student’s guidance counselor or social worker will be permitted during this process. 9. Flexible detention schedules will commence this semester. This means that a teacher can send a disruptive student to the in-house detention center indefinitely until such time the teacher thinks the student has learn his/her lesson. The parents, guidance counselor, and social worker of the student will not be notified of this detention. 10. Students e-mail will be read by computer and screened for objectionable words. 11. Student web site activity will also be monitored by computer and the log of the student’s activities will be noted.

Students who suspect one of their classmates in violation of any of the above rules must report the student to the school administration immediately. 14. Any student suspected of violating one of these rules, whether upon rumor or gut feeling of school staff, my be held in the detention room indefinitely. 15. Any of the above rules may be changed by the administration without notice to the student body. I have read the above and am aware of my rights and responsibilities contained within. I therefore waive my right of defense in any possible infraction of the above rules.
